Indymedia emerged from the clouds of tear gas that filled the streets of Seattle in 1999 as a tool for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth. Then and now, the stories told through Indymedia come from the hearts and minds of people on the frontlines of the struggle for justice against tyranny. Since 1999, Indymedia has grown into a network of over 160 Independent Media Centers (IMCs) all over the world by means of a commitment to equality, decentralization and autonomy. Portland Indymedia is an IMC for the southern Cascadia region of Turtle Island (an area temporarily demarcated as "Oregon" and southern "Washington" on some maps). Indymedia activism can take many forms, but is rooted in the Indymedia Principles of Unity which profess that the open exchange of and open access to information is a prerequisite to the building of a more free and just society. The Portland Indymedia principles of unity (see below) are based on this document. Portland Indymedia is not a membership organization; it is a tactic, a concept, and a movement that can be effectively utilized in many different ways.

I know, I know, again with the stawberries. Well, I’m trying to get rid of everything I can out of my freezer, so out come the frozen strawberries.
2 eggs, separated 1/2 cup oil 1 3/4 cup milk 1 3/4 cup flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt chocolate chips (optional) This is just a basic waffle recipe. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form - set aside. Mix the egg yolks, oil and milk, then add the dry ingredients. Add the egg whites last - just fold them in, you’ll see little bits still showing - don’t overmix it, or your waffles won’t be crispy!
When you pour the batter on your waffle machine, you can sprinkle some chocolate chips on too. We usually do some with and some without - they get a little to sweet for me. For the strawberry sauce I just heated some frozen strawberries, a little water, sugar and a teeny bit of cornstarch to thicken it.
Happy Easter!

This recipe is a variation of a banana muffin recipe from my grandmother, Joan. I love the combination of strawberries and bananas. I found that these didn’t rise too high, so go ahead and fill the muffin cups all the way to the top!
1 cup rolled oats 1 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk (or soymilk) 1/3 cup canola oil 1 banana, mashed 8-10 fresh strawberries, chopped sugar for topping (optional) Mix oats, flour, sugar and baking powder together in a bowl. Mix eggs, milk, oil and the mashed banana together in another bowl. (Joan’s instructions say to mix in a blender, but I was too lazy to get mine out, so I did it by hand.)
Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until combined. Stir in the strawberries last. Pour into a lightly oiled muffin tin, sprinkling sugar on top if desired. Coarse sugar like demererra is best for this, it makes a lovely crunch on top. Bake at 375F for 25-30 minutes.
Makes 12. http://www.orangejuicy.com/journal/?p=306

Paper has been my primary medium of choice for a long time. It is an everyday material yet has potential to manifest itself in surprisingly diverse ways. I have drawn and painted on paper, printed images on paper (photography), then in graduate school (Pratt 99') folded paper. And for the past 4 years, I've mainly been cutting paper. Cut paper exists in many cultures and is normally perceived as a craft medium. In Japan where I was born, this medium is used for stencil making--a way to make patterns for kimono wear. I became attracted to the medium because of its history as well as its process of cutting to make images. Cut paper piece has a look of a drawing at the same time has its own physicality. I am interested in organic beings--insects, animals, and human bodies--how they are born out of nature but constantly being influenced and modified by culture. And the line between culture and nature is always shifting depending on the time and where one is. At the beginning, I focused on the notion of body as environment/ecosystem based on the philosophy of ancient Chinese medicine (holistic approach) and Greek philosophy of macro/microcosm idea.
This year (2008), I am finishing up two installation pieces I started a while ago, at the same time drawing and making new cut paper pieces. Last year was such a good year for me in many ways that I hope this trend will continue this year too. http://www.kakoueda.com/html/slideshow.php

A Brief Explanation... Free Radio Santa Cruz has been on the air for over twelve years without a license. We broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in defiance of federal regulations. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is charged with regulating the airwaves in the public interest. We believe that it has failed to do so and has proved itself to be controlled by monied interests.
We go on the air to protest corporate control of the airwaves, to bring local control and local accountability to our community media, to produce and broadcast a diversity of programs that are simply unavailable on corporate controlled stations. We do not air advertisements, we do not do pledge drives, we do not have sponsors or underwriters.
We are able to remain on the air because of the commitment by our collective members and the help of our community. If you are a listener of Free Radio Santa Cruz, please help us maintain the public airwaves by making a donation.
FRSC is part of a growing micro-radio movement, supporting the work of other independent media and other pirate and noncommercial web and broadcast stations. To find out more, listen to this history of Free Radio Santa Cruz.
Want to get your own show? Please fill out the application (en español) and mail it to us along with a demo tape or CD. See the schedule for available time slots. We are looking for original, creative new programming. We are especially interested in having more diversity. If you think that you can offer something to the community on our station, please apply today.
